Chital Deer Reintroduced into Buxa Tiger Reserve’s Rajabhatkhawa Forest

52 chital and 29 spotted deer released into Rajabhatkhawa forest under careful watch.

Alipurduar, Feb 16 (Siliguri Journal) – Last Friday, 29 spotted deer, also known as chital, were set free in the Rajabhatkhawa forest of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. This was done to make sure there’s enough food for the tigers living in the forest. Praveen Kaswan, from the Buxa Tiger Reserve, shared that these deer came from the Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s important to note that in the last three years, a couple of hundred deer have been released into the Buxa forest to help maintain the ecosystem.

Reports indicate that there are more sambar and barking deer in the forest compared to spotted deer, which are the main prey for tigers. To address this shortage, forest authorities plan to bring spotted deer from various state sanctuaries to the Buxa forest.

In a recent initiative by the Buxa Tiger Project, 52 chital deer were introduced into the forest. Similarly, last Friday, approximately 29 spotted deer were released into the core area of the Rajabhatkhawa forest with the supervision of forest department officials.
