On January 25, 1987, a ‘Rail Roko’ campaign at Altagram railway station sought Kamtapuri statehood and language. Tragically, the firing on protestors led to the loss of lives, including Jagdish Chandra Roy from Sahudangi and Gajan Roy from Dhupguri. Since then, every year on January 25, Martyrs’ Day is observed in their memory.
