Alipurduar, Dec 23 (Siliguri Journal) – Residents from Gangutia and Bhutia Basti in Kumargram block, within West Bengal’s Alipurduar, have started moving as part of the relocation process under Buxa Tiger Reserve. This action follows the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s directive to relocate the state’s initial two forest communities.
According to reports, tigers will soon inhabit the core forest areas of Buxa Tiger Reserve, prompting the ongoing relocation of the mentioned villages. Residents are currently receiving half of the Rs 7.5 lakh financial package. Notably, those living in the area for 18 years and more will be entitled to a Rs 15 lakh package, following the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority. The commencement of the rehabilitation process has brought joy to the forest settlement’s residents.
Praveen Kaswan, Director of Buxa Tiger Reserve, disclosed that half of the financial package has been deposited into the accounts of 191 families in Gangutia village and 51 families in Bhutia Basti. He further assured that the relocation process is expected to conclude within the next six months.
